XCS Board Reopening Plan and School Opening Category

Dear Xavier Families,

The XCS Board of Directors met last week for the regular monthly board meeting and determined that, at this point, school will reopen in the Yellow category described in our reopening plan. The reopening plan is attached to this email, and details about the Yellow category can be found there. Essentially, this means that students would return to school for face-to-face instruction (unless they are enrolled in the online schooling program) with procedures and protections in place to mitigate the spread of the virus.

Last night the Board met in a special meeting and also addressed the use of face coverings for the 2020-2021 school year. In the original reopening plan face coverings were required for students riding the bus, this remains in place in the updated plan. One significant change to the reopening plan is the requirement that staff, students, and visitors wear masks during the school day when social distancing cannot be maintained. The wording for the requirement is as follows and can also be found in the attached reopening plan.

Approved Board Motion 8-17-2020:

Staff, students, and visitors are required to utilize a face covering within the school building at all times. Exceptions will be made for breakfast/lunch while eating and other instances designated by school administration where social distancing can be maintained. Face shields will be provided to staff upon request and availability. In addition, disposable masks will also be made available as supplies allow.

Considerations/exceptions will be made for staff, students, and visitors who provide documentation from a state licensed medical professional stating the wearing of a face covering could be a health risk for that individual. Considerations/exceptions will also be made per IEP/504 team recommendation.

Exceptions for teachers/staff may be made on a case by case basis if their location maintains social distancing guidelines or an appropriate barrier (plexiglass or something similar) is in place and approved after consultation with the SCPHD

Face covering options include:

· A securely attached cloth face-covering which covers the nose and
· A securely attached disposable paper covering which covers the nose
and mouth, OR
· A clear face-shield which wraps around the face and extends to below
the chin

In other action taken last week, the Board suspended attendance requirements in regards to illness related absences for the 2020-2021 school year. We strongly recommend that any student showing any signs or symptoms of illness stay home. Illness related absences will not be counted towards a student’s 10 allowable absences in a semester.
