Dear Xavier Families,
I am writing to inform you of some school calendar changes that were approved by the Board of Directors after administrative recommendations.
The first change to make note of is that there will be no school for students on February 25th and 26th. Teachers will be taking part in a professional development training that was originally scheduled to take place prior to school starting. The training had to be rescheduled due to Covid-19 restrictions that were in place at the time.
The second and more immediate change will begin next week and is a result of the Covid-19 protocols that we have had to put in place in order to prevent the spread of the virus and the impact the safety protocols have had on teacher preparation time. Our concern is providing our teachers and staff the support and time needed to provide a high-quality education for your student that will continue to meet Xavier standards. After an administrative recommendation, the Board decided to implement a Distance Learning Day every other week on a trial basis. The first Distance Learning Day will be on Wednesday, November 18th. The other Distance Learning Days, during the trial period, will be on the following Wednesdays: December 2nd, December 16th, and January 6th.
Students will stay home on the Distance Learning Days. They will be assigned schoolwork by their teacher(s) and/or learning platforms that are available. Students will complete the school work at home on the designated days and be accountable for the work assigned. Teachers and other school staff will be working at school on the Distance Learning Days to make up for the preparation time that has been lost due to the daily safety protocols that are in place and to prepare instruction for upcoming weeks. Our Covid-19 safety protocols have been effective and have allowed us to stay open for face-to-face instruction up to this point even when most schools around us have had to move to alternate schedules.
We have tried to develop a plan that minimizes the time students will not be at school for face-to-face learning and still provide our teachers and staff with the time needed to do the best job possible. At the conclusion of the trial period stakeholders, including parents and staff, will be surveyed and data will be analyzed to determine the effectiveness of the Distance Learning Days. The Board will review the surveys and data and make a decision regarding the second semester at the January board meeting.
